Baba Evans Moore attended the Chicago Theological Seminary on a John Haynes Holmes Fellowship. After graduating, he served three years as a Unitarian minister and an active member of The Chicago Center for Black Religious Studies. He eventually left All Souls Unitarian Church after deciding his ministry was on the streets of Chicago and not limited to the walls of his Church.
Baba’s social conscious guided him through the Civil Rights Movement of the turbulent Sixties and Seventies, where he worked with members of the three major youth gangs in Chicago in a program called, “LSD: Lords, Stones and Disciples”.
His work in Chicago completed, Baba relocated to Atlanta, to pursue the entrepreneurial life. He partnered with a famous entertainer and formed B&E Petroleum, a successful oil company. On the heels of his business success, Baba found himself advising local Black business owners how to become minority suppliers to get their piece of the American Pie.
When economic opportunities favored a move from Atlanta, Baba chose Washington, D.C. as his new home. He became Chief of Staff to the senior member on the D.C. Board of Education and later D.C. Public School’s Parent Involvement Coordinator. Always the community activist, Baba felt a deep need to respond to D.C.’s street violence and growing problems in the district’s schools. That response inspired his writing career, compelling him to write about the many social issues facing poor peoples in the nation’s capital. Eventually, he applied lessons from his experiences in Chicago and chose to contribute to the community as an educator, literacy advocate and community activist.
Baba Evans Moore lives in Maryland and is Parent Educator for the Toyota Family Literacy Program in a D.C. elementary school.
